I often get inquiries from citizen groups that are looking for presentations on the health effects of air pollution.
Here are a couple of great video resources to consider:
In February 2007, the Sevier Citizens for Clean Air and Water in Richfield , Utah sponsored a public meeting and invited one of the world’s leading experts on the health effects of air pollution to give a presentation. Professor C. Arden Pope III is the Mary Lou Fulton Professor of Economics at Brigham Young University and a world renowned epidemiologist. The Sevier Citizens for Clean Air and Water has performed a public service by producing a terrific video of Dr. Pope’s presentation and disseminating it on the internet. The hour-long video presentation presents evidence from dozens of scientific studies documenting the effects of fine particulate matter on the lungs, circulatory system and the heart. It covers all of the important historical studies and highlights the latest new evidence on the effects of fine particle pollution on children’s health, cardiorespiratory mechanisms, and premature death. The California Children’s Health Study is a seminal investigation of the health effects of air pollution on children’s health. Investigators at University of Southern California followed a cohort of school-aged children living in 12 southern California communities over a ten year period. This 30-minute video entitled “A Breath of Air: What Pollution is Doing to Our Children” highlights the key findings of the study showing that children who live in more polluted communities have reduced lung function growth and more school absences than kids who live in cleaner air areas. It features interviews with Dr. John Peters, the study director as well as Dr. Jim Gauderman of the University of Southern California . The video is available to download online, and may be ordered for free from the California Air Resources Board. It is also available in Spanish.
