We live in Clairton, PA, with our 4 children.  Clairton is an impovrished area that is littered with a sea of boarded up and condemned buildings.  There is obviously crime.  One would never realize from all the poverty that Clairton is the home of a company that is the largest in the nation.  The proof that there is such an economic machine is the unending stream of hazardous material shot from the smokestacks.  It is all day, every day.  The class system that exists in this country allows the poor people of this area to be poluted.  It is almost comes across as a socially acceptable form of genicide because no one is doing anything.  We personnaly care greatly about air quality.  Before we purchased this home (our first) we searched the internet trying to find information regarding air quality.  We were certain that the information was out there.  People we spoke to insisted that there was no problem with this plant.  We could fine no negative information and finally concluded that there must be new products that have created a cleaner running plant and that there are no negative effects to living near by.  Once we moved here, we found out the truth.  The front porch would be coated with a layer of black soot.  Our children's feet would be black on the bottom if they ran barefoot in the yard.  It was heartbreaking.  We have wanted to move desperately and are trapped.  We have no money to even purchase a modern furnace so we at least have clean air in our home.  We have no money to be able to leave and no one who cares that children are being effected.
